Heart and Heritage A History of Gulf Hills
Gulf Hills opened in 1927 as an upscale winter resort. It had one of the most beautiful golf courses in the Southeast, a yacht basin, a riding stable, a clubhouse, and a handful of fine homes built close to the water. Having a strategic location by rail, pleasant weather and a hilly landscape directly on the Gulf, it was a gathering place for movie stars, gangsters, and the “upper crust” often from Chicago and places north.
Over the years it evolved into a more relaxed Dude Ranch featuring horseback riding, square dancing, hayrides, rodeos, waterskiing shows, tennis tournaments – with its enticing 18 hole golf course and golf tournaments drawing national awards. Still, you could expect to see stars from the entertainment world (and less noticeable Mafia figures).
Gulf Hills has continued to evolve with time and the events that have shaped it. Now known as a coveted residential community, the resort continues its gracious hospitality as a first-rate hotel and conference center, golf club and picturesque golf course.
